Service-Learning

“Service-Learning” (Lernen durch Engagement – LdE) links school-based learning with civic engagement. The goal is to inspire students at an early age to engage in democratic action and social responsibility while simultaneously strengthening academic competencies. Gesamtschule Bremen Ost is one of eight secondary schools in Bremen starting with this concept in 2026.

We will initially implement the first LdE projects in several 7th-grade classes. These projects are developed within regular lessons and combine academic content with community service. The specific design of the projects takes place within the respective classes and is supervised by their teachers. Students regularly reflect on their actions and link them to the curriculum content.

“Service-Learning in Bremen – shaping society together” is a program by the Senator for Children and Education Bremen and is implemented by the State Institute for Schools (LIS) and the Bremen Volunteer Agency in partnership with the NORDMETALL Foundation and the Barthel Foundation.
