GSO

Award-winning

Over the past 20 years, Gesamtschule Bremen Ost (GSO) has established itself as an educational institution in Bremen that is known beyond the state’s borders. The school has received several awards to date, recognising its outstanding work in the educational landscape.

The German School Award

A key focus among these recognitions is the German School Award 2018, which honoured GSO for its school development and its commitment across the six quality areas:

Quality of teaching: GSO places great emphasis on innovative teaching methods and differentiated instruction that addresses the individual needs of students.

Achievement: The school promotes not only academic success, but also students’ personal development and the development of their abilities through many cultural projects.

Dealing with diversity: GSO is known for enabling all students—regardless of their background or abilities—to participate equally in everyday school life.

Responsibility: The school promotes students’ personal responsibility and participation in decision-making, which contributes to a positive school climate.

School climate/school life: Respectful and supportive interaction shapes school life at GSO, reflected in a strong sense of community and a high level of identification of students with their school.

External partners: GSO works closely with various external partners to provide students with a comprehensive educational offering.

In addition, GSO is perceived as a learning institution that continuously works on its further development and puts innovative approaches into practice.

From the citation for the German School Award 2018:

[…] In a neighbourhood with a high proportion of socially disadvantaged children, Gesamtschule Bremen-Ost has developed a distinctive pedagogical profile in an excellent way by showing how support can help overcome experiences of failure and a lack of prospects. Decoupling social origin and family background is a task that is present everywhere. Teachers invest in relationships and in a wide range of learning and development opportunities through which they hold children and young people accountable for their school with constant confidence in them and challenge them to achieve. Differentiated learning organisation, reliable staff planning, and commitments between the school, the student body and parents are built on binding team structures and open up an effective space of possibilities for success.

Committed and innovation-minded teachers, together with the collegial anchoring of an inclusive understanding of achievement through multiprofessional teams, ensure exemplary support for talents through large-scale projects in domains that would otherwise have remained hidden to the children and young people in this district. Outstanding graduates

The GSO school community is delighted with outstanding graduates who have achieved remarkable successes in the past. For example, our former student Nilay Aksoy received a full scholarship to Harvard University in autumn 2023. Alexandra Schween, who in 2025 passed her Abitur at GSO as Bremen’s top graduate with a grade of 1.0 and an outstanding 880 out of 900 possible points, was honoured for this by the Karl Nix Foundation.
